Who were the geniuses that figured out you could bind pieces of cereal together with marshmallows and transform it into something delicious? As it turns out, we have Mildred Day and Malitta Jensen (two women who worked in the Kellogg Company Home Economics department) and an annual Camp Fire Girls bake sale competition in 1939 to thank for this invention. When trying to think of a unique dessert using their company’s cereal, Mildred and Malitta spied a box of Camp Fire Marshmallows. The rest is history.
Since 1939, Rice Krispies Treats have grown increasingly snap, crackle and pop-ular. We’re always sure to nab one at the local bake sale, but then we got the idea to make some ourselves here at Mouth HQ. As any treat fanatic knows, you only need two other ingredients besides cereal, butter and marshmallows, and we have some cool, funky takes on those: s’mores, bourbon and even cotton candy! And we were totally inspired by the possibilities presented by mixing in some unexpected indie snacks!
The result? Our indie twists on this classic recipe.
1. Fluffernutter Rice Krispies Treats
Our first recipe? Fluffernutter Rice Krispies Treats. At Mouth HQ, we’re big peanut butter enthusiasts. So that had to happen. But we decided on Bacon Peanut Butter Cups as the delivery system… because, bacon.
2. Bourbon Caramel Spiced Pecan Rice Krispies Treats
If we have the opportunity to make something boozy, we take it! That’s what happened with our Bourbon Caramel Pecan Rice Krispies Treats. Plus, the spiced, candied pecans add such a distinctively fall flavor that you’ll immediately be transported to an apple-picking orchard with fall leaves all around you. Hayride not included.
3. Double Chocolate S'mores Rice Krispies Treats
We’re also obsessed with s’mores. Especially when all the flavors of a s’more are packed into gorgeous, handmade, graham-cracker dusted marshmallows from Wondermade! So the Double Chocolate S’mores recipe was the obvious next choice. You can even taste the campfire in the Smoked Chocolate Chips.
